Obtaining a temporary residence permit (TRP) in Russia is an important step for foreigners who want to legally live and work in the country. One of the mandatory requirements is passing an exam on knowledge of the Russian language, Russian history, and the fundamentals of Russian legislation.

Why is the exam necessary?

How the exam is taken

The exam consists of three modules:

  1. Russian Language
  • tests reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills;
  • assignments range from understanding simple texts to oral dialogues.

2. Russian History

  • basic knowledge of key events, dates, and personalities;
  • questions are in a test format.

3. Fundamentals of Russian Legal System

  • Knowledge of the Constitution, the rights and responsibilities of foreigners, employment regulations, and healthcare;

It is also held in a test format.

All tests are conducted at accredited training centers. The exam lasts approximately 2 hours.

How to Prepare

Russian Language — Read simple texts, watch films/news with subtitles, practice writing short texts.

Russian History — Study key dates: the Christianization of Rus’, the formation of the Muscovite state, Peter the reforms, the Great Patriotic War, etc.

Legal systems — Familiarize yourself with the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the rights of foreigners, and migration registration rules.

Results

Passing the TRP exam is possible if you start preparing early. The main thing is to regularly practice Russian and systematize your knowledge of history and legislation. Successfully passing the exam opens the door to legal residence in Russia and simplifies subsequent steps, such as obtaining a residence permit or citizenship.
