How to pay in Russia

Methods of payments

For 2025, Russia continues to support a variety of payment methods for foreign citizens, coming to study abroad, despite the international restrictions imposed. It is important to be aware of the options available for convenient payments in the country. This article summarizes the main payment methods that foreigners can use.

The first thing to say is that, whether you pay in cash or by card, in Russia you must pay for products or services in rubles.

Neither dollars nor euros nor any other currency are accepted as a legal payment method.

The good news is that the Russian currency has suffered a sharp devaluation recently. If in October 2022 the rate was around 60 rubles per euro/dollar, today this rate is around 100 rubles.

This means travel to Russia is now much cheaper.

– UnionPay: The Chinese payment system UnionPay is widely used in Russia. Many banks offer UnionPay cards, and they are accepted at most retail outlets and ATMs.

– MIR: The Russian national payment system MIR is actively developing. MIR cards are accepted in most Russian banks and retail outlets. However, their use outside Russia is limited and not all countries support this system.

Cash rubles are accepted everywhere. Currency exchange can be done at banks, exchange offices and some hotels.

Some Russian banks offer special cards for foreigners, who visit Russia, that can be used to pay for goods and services in Russia.

These cards are often issued on the basis of the MIR system and may be available only to foreign citizens, who are travelling abroad.
Recommendations for foreign citizens:

– Check card compatibility: Before visiting Russia, it is advisable to check with your bank to see if your card supports working in Russia and any possible restrictions.
– Using local banking services: Opening an account with a Russian bank can be a convenient way to manage your finances while travelling in Russia. Some banks offer special terms and conditions for foreign nationals.
– Considering restrictions: Be aware of current sanctions and restrictions that may affect the use of certain payment systems and cards.

Please note that the situation with payment systems and payment methods may change. It is recommended to familiarize yourself with the current information in advance and plan your financial transactions considering possible changes.

And don’t forget that we always can help you with all payment things when you come to study at Educa School!
