When traveling in Russia take your time to visit not only its main cities but also those nearby. If you ever find yourself in Saint Petersburg, plan a few days outside of it. This time, let us tell you about the beautiful republic of Karelia and the small maritime city of Kronstadt.
Karelia
Please do not think that one day in Karelia would be enough, those planning to visit this region should allocate at least a couple of days to do so. Visitors to the region will be able to relax and enjoy the diverse nature: coniferous forests, numerous lakes, and rivers. Also, enjoy the Ruskeala Mountain Park and the Marble Canyon, where nature and human labour collide.
Karelia has much to offer at any time of year, and each season brings a different touch to the region. Maybe go river rafting in summer, or skiing in winter, visit Karelia’s many islands in autumn or go berry picking in the forest.
Don’t miss Kizhi Island to see the church of the same name, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kizhi church is a great monument of Russian architecture that attracts tourists from all over the world.
Kronshtadt
Situated on Kotlin Island near St. Petersburg, lies the maritime city of Kronstadt.
Military enthusiasts can see the mooring of warships and the origin of the Baltic fleet. There are several forts around the island and you can get to them by taking a tour or organizing a trip yourself.
Be sure to visit the fort of Emperor Alexander the I that was built in 1845 to defend St. Petersburg, and find out why it’s also known as the ‘Plague Fort’ (spooky, isn’t it?).
It is open to visitors. Fans of lighthouses will also find much to admire in Kronstadt. For the church architecture enthusiasts — a grand Neo-Byzantine-style Maritime Cathedral imperiously overlooks the city centre.
