Buildings in Russian style in a European city

Travellers who come to Russia usually note that the city looks quite European. St. Petersburg is also often called “Northern Venice”, and that’s for reason. However, the Russian soul still can be found in the city. Here are some buildings in Russian style you can see in the city, and we even won’t mention the Church on Spilt Blood!

The museum is open for visitors, so if you are travelling to Russia and are interested in Russian history, it will be a good and out-of-the-beaten-track choice.

There are many former apartment houses in St. Peterburg, in Russian they are called доходные дома. One of them is Basin house, built in neo-Russian style. The elements you can see on the front look like traditional Russian wooden carvings. The house is situated in the very city center, just a few steps from Nevsky Prospect, so if you study Russian in Educa, you can just walk there from the school. The building today is not open for visitors as it is a dwelling house.

travel to russiaUspenskaya Church

There are many orthodox cathedrals in St. Petersburg, one of them is Uspenskaya Church (the Church of the Assumption). It was built in the end of the 18th century and is situated on Vasilievsky island. The church was closed during the Soviet time, used as a bomb-proof shelter during World War II, and even as an ice-rink after. The building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1993 and completely renovated by 2013. The church style is not typical for St Petersburg. Traditional Russian ornaments, tiles and mosaics, and other key elements of the Russian style are present both outside and inside this beautiful church.
