How to define your Russian language proficiency?

Studying Russian or just going to learn Russian language you would like to know how much time you need to achieve results? And how to understand your current Russian level as a Foreign language?

TORFL and TRKI – what is it?

At the end of the course all Educa’s students get a certificate of completion where their level of Russian is written. Our school relies on the Russian State Certification Testing System for Russian as a Foreign Language (TRKI/ТРКИ), which is a member of the European Linguistic Testers Association (ALTE) and has a second name — Test of Russian as a foreign language (TORFL).
In this regard we distinguish some following levels:

Levels of the Russian language proficiency

If you decided to learn Russian in Russia we are absolutely convinced that this is the best idea. When you are studying abroad and immersing yourself in Russian language culture, your progress will be very fast and the result will be not long in coming.

 

A1 Elementary

For our complete beginner-students it usually takes about 80 – 100 academic-hours to reach this level. So if you choose Standard course at Educa Russian language school you can get this level approximately in 1 month of studying Russian. If students take an Intensive or One-to-One language course they will get the result even sooner.

So what kind of results are we talking about?
At this level students :

  • know Russian alphabet, can read and write
  • greet, introduce, get acquainted with somebody
  • tell about yourself, professions, working day, hobbies, interests, family, nationality
  • know numbers, able to tell about time, temperature
  • agree on the time and place of the meeting
  • tell about locations, places, where you live
  • are able to navigate the city

 

A2 Basic

Following the communicative language methodology of Educa language school it is easy to achieve this level after 180 – 200 hours. A2 level of competence in Russian as a foreign language is very important because by this level you have to learn almost all grammar things. But keep calm – Educa’s teachers will never  let you be bored in class, we use a lot of interactive exercises on our Russian lessons in Saint Petersburg.

Study in Russia, Saint PetersburgDuring the course you will be able to initiate and hold a conversation in daily life situations (in administrative organisations, in a shop, at the bank, in a restaurant, hospital), to rent an apartment or a hotel room, greet smb a happy birthday; discuss advantages and disadvantages of cities transport, system of education, health care system and so on.

This course will help you to navigate well in the city and immerse yourself in the study of Russian culture (holidays, traditions, customs, Russian cuisine etc.)

 

B1 Intermediate

Usually it takes about 150 – 180 hours to get the B1 level if you know everything from Elementary and Basic levels. More difficult vocabulary is typical for this level. You will read articles from newspapers, magazines, discuss policy, economy, news and feel enough confident in everyday situations, your professional area. If you want to study in Russian university having this level is mandatory.

 

B2 Advanced

Russian language coursesSo how to understand that you have already achieved B2 level? Think whether you can communicate freely in formal and informal setting, choose a communication style appropriate to the situation.

You can reach this level of Russian in about 240 hours if you have successfully completed all previous levels. Getting this level is usually enough to do business in Russia. C1 Proficiency, C2 Fluency

These levels provide high communicative competency in all environment and give an opportunity for professional philological activities in the Russian language. So you can pursue professional activity as editor, translator, journalist, diplomat etc., work in Russian company and be able to read Russian literature. C2 level brings you closer to the level of an educated Russian native speaker.
