Short stories by Anton Chekhov

study RussianAnton Chekhov is a famous Russian playwright of the end of 19th century, probably you’ve heard about some of his plays like “Three Sisters” or “Uncle Vanya: that you still can see in many theaters around the world. However, Chekhov is not only a famous playwright, but also one of the most famous Russian short stories writers. Chekhov has a medical background, and showed Russian life that he was seeing in a very realistic and ironic way. Most of his stories are very interesting to read so you can pick any and won’t be mistaken, but among the most popular once we can highlight “The Lady with the Dog”, “The Man in a Case”, “Kashtanka”.

 

Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov

Mikhail Bulgakov is a very famous Russian writer of the 20th century, his “Master and Margarita” is a very popular and deep Russian novel loved by both Russians and foreigners. However, we recommend you to check a less famous novel outside Russia that is called “Heart of a Dog”. This is a satirical story about an experiment that goes out of control: a doctor transplant human organs into a dog, and the story spins around the result of this experiment.

“Dark Alleys” by Ivan Bunin

Ivan Bunin Is a Noble-Prize-winning Russian writer of the first half of the 20th century who had to leave Soviet Russia, as he didn’t accept the communist regime. “Dark Alleys” is his most famous collection of short stories that are all united by the concept of love. These are beautiful, but dark stories, that certainly won’t leave you indifferent. Although “Dark Alleys” have a common concept and can be read as a novel, you can also pick some short stories that catch your attention.
