Useful apps and tips

If you are planning a visit to St. Petersburg, to study Russian in Educa, for example, you may wonder, how to navigate in the city. There are many means of transport; the city is big. So let’s find out which apps to use to not get lost, and how to explore the city in the most comfortable way.

Buy a local Sim card

The first thing we recommend you to do, is to buy a local sim-card. You can do it right in the airport and for some 5-7 € per month, you will have an unlimited Internet connection. There are many Wi-fi points in the city, but it is great to always stay connected, isn’t it?

Download essential apps

The first app we recommend you to get is YandexGo (ЯндексGo). This is a taxi app and this mean of transport is quite cheap in Russia. You can get to the hotel from the airport for 10-20 €. However, we recommend to use Comfort option or higher for the better service.

The next app you certainly need is YandexMaps (Яндекс Карты). It is a great app not only to check where you are, or where the nearest café, restaurant or a bus station is, but it also will help to find the most convenient route, indicating the public transport you can use.

Get a Podorozhnik transport card

Taxi is great, of course, but you may also need to use public transport. No matter which transport you use, you can pay by Podorozhnik card that is sold at any metro station. The card works as a purse, you just put some money on this card pay using it each time you are using public transport. The rides will be cheaper than if you buy a one-time ticket.

Metro is a very convenient mean of transport in St. Petersburg that can get you to any district of the city. The metro is fast – you will never get stuck in a traffic jam, beautiful, and is quite easy to navigate.  The metro in St. Petersburg is deep, so get ready for a long way down before taking a ride. By the way, there are even two metro stations next to Educa – Nevsky Prospect and Admiralteyskaya.

And don’t be afraid to ask locals! If you got lost, you can always address people around you. Russian may seem a bit gloomy, but in fact are very helpful.
