Learning Russian is not an easy task and students often ask us many questions, here are some answers.

Is Russian easy to learn?

  • Russian is considered to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. However, it is not as difficult as you may think, here is why:
  • Cyrrilic alphabet is one of the easiest to learn — it is very similar to the english alphabet and it’s only 33 letters.
  • It is phonetical — you read the same as you write, the reading rules are pretty simple.
  • Grammar is more complex than in a European language, there are many exceptions, but there’s more freedom as well: there are no strict rules that lead to miscommunication.
  • Our students learn to speak basic Russian in just 3 months of their language trip in Saint Petersburg.

How can I learn Russian quickly?

Here are the key points:

  • Determine your goal in learning Russian, write it down and don’t forget;
  • Find a professional teacher of Russian of sign up for a course at school;
  • Schedule the lessons and don’t miss them, be consistent;
  • Prepare your homework after each class and write down the questions to ask your teacher at the next lesson;
  • When you reach A2 level, find a Russian friend to practice Russian;

How long does it take to learn Russian?

It depends on the goal: one can learn basic Russian and communicate on the Elementary level (A2) for 3-4 months. If there’s a need to pass the TRFL exam — it may take you up to 2 years. Fluency can be reached within 1 year of hard work, learning and practicing Russian daily.

Is Russian harder to learn than German, Spanish, French?

If your native language is English — yes, Russian will be harder to learn as it has a different alphabet. However, it doesn’t take much time to learn the 33 letters of the Russian alphabet as they look similar to Latin.

How much does it cost to learn Russian in Russia?

1 academic hour in a small group is around 10 euros depending on the course intensity. Individual lessons of Russian are 21-30 euros per lesson, the price depends on the duration of the course.

Can you study free in Russia?

Yes, you can get a scholarship and study in one of the Russian universities. Also, one of the ways to study Russian for free is to come as a tourist and make friends. There are many friendly Russians who would be glad to teach their language for free. It won’t be that effective and fast, professional Russian teachers don’t teach for free. However, in most cases learning Russian in Russia is relatively cheap.

Is Russia a good place to study?

Yes, here’s why:

  • Higher education is cheaper than education of the same quality and status in other European universities.
  • It is cheap to live in Russia in comparison with European countries and the US.
  • There are programs in English.
  • If the program is in Russian, there is a good opportunity to learn a useful and unique language.
  • It is unique and unusual — no one is surprised if you say you study in Germany or Britain.
  • Russian cities are very convenient to live in — there is fast, cheap and stable internet, deliveries and 24/7 stores everywhere.

What are the requirements to study in Russia?

Our school doesn’t have any requirements — anyone can join any Russian course in Saint Petersburg and online.
As for universities, they all have different requirements. Usually, you need to have a certificate from your previous place of study, ID and a filled questionnaire. If you’re applying for a scholarship, you need to pass the State Exam and (or) take part in state competitions.

Is learning Russian beneficial?

Yes.

  • Russian is spoken in at least 6 countries.

  • It is a unique language and most Russians don’t speak English.
