One of the easiest, yet most effective ways to improve your perception of a foreign language is to listen to, read and watch content in that language.

Let’s imagine that you are learning Russian. Unusual and extremely commendable choice, you have settled for a very, very complex language. So, you learn Russian and want to learn not only the standard phrases printed in every textbook, but also the live speech. How do people speak in Russia now? Of course, the best way to find out is to come to Russia, walk the streets, and listen to the conversations of the strangers you meet.

But what if you can’t travel at the moment? And yet you’d love to hear how people talk now on the streets of Moscow or St. Petersburg, for example.

The classics of Russian literature are no help here, unfortunately. The language is changing, evolving, new constructions are appearing. Every day we discuss things that simply did not exist before. Kuprin will not teach you to have a conversation about addiction to social media. You will not find out how modern day people in Russia express their emotions by reading Gruboedov.

All of this being said, series could become one of your to-go tools. Contemporary Russian TV series. Why tv-series?
It doesn’t take much time to watch a series, about half an hour to an hour. Many series do not require super-concentration, because the plot stretches over a season.

Here’s a little recommendation for you:
1) when you want a show that is tense – “Триггер” (“Trigger”
2) for a laugh, watch “Вампиры средней полосы” (“Vampires of the Midlands”)
3) if you want mysticism – watch “Топи” (“Topi”) 18+
